AI Agents vs LLMs: Do You Need Different Optimization?
I gave a presentation at Podfest about how to optimize your content, especially podcast content, for LLM search. At Podfest I learned about Manus, an AI agent that's pretty good at helping with tasks and that I've been using.
Using Manus made me wonder: do we have to optimize our content differently for AI Agents than we do for LLMs? When Manus put together a presentation for me, it pulled data from the internet so I know it's 'crawling' websites like Google and the LLMs do, but does it act the same way?
The answer is no, AI Agents don't recognize content exactly the same way that LLMs do.
Understanding llms.txt Files
One key optimization tool that emerged in 2026 is the llms.txt file that is put on the root directory of your website. Here's how different AI systems use it:
| File | Primary User | Use Case |
|---|---|---|
| llms.txt | LLMs (ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity) | Quick discovery and accurate citations in a chat window. |
| llms-full.txt | Agents (Claude Computer Use, Gemini Agents, AI Dev Tools) | Deep reasoning, multi-step tasks, and offline ingestion. |
A New Category of Agency Has Emerged
The table is the tip of the iceberg for optimizations and I'm not in the business of building websites, so I asked Gemini if I could find a company to do this for me. This is what it said:
In 2026, a new category of agency has emerged specifically for this, often called AIAO Agencies (AI Agent Optimization) or GEO Agencies (Generative Engine Optimization).
What to Ask a Company Before Hiring Them
If you interview an agency to do this, ask these three questions to see if they are actually 2026-ready:
- 1. "Do you provide a 'Deep Think' optimization strategy?"
This ensures they are optimizing for the reasoning capabilities of Gemini 3 and GPT-5.
- 2. "How do you handle 'Entity Linking' in our Schema markup?"
This is how they prove to the AI that you are the same Elizabeth Gearhart mentioned in your podcast and on your site.
- 3. "Can you set up an llms.txt file that is token-optimized?"
This saves the agent "brain power," making it more likely to choose your site over a competitor's.
The Bottom Line
AI Agents are fundamentally different from LLMs in how they discover, process, and utilize content. While LLMs rely on their training data, AI Agents actively search the web in real-time, making proper optimization crucial for visibility.
If you're serious about being discovered by AI Agents in 2026 and beyond, it's worth investing in proper AIAO/GEO optimization—whether you do it yourself or hire an agency that truly understands the difference.
